about

A second half of assorted works from between 2013-2016, RTRO2TR serves as a final bookend to the "Broken Mirror" cycle of writing and recording.

This EP contains five tracks - three instrumental and two with vocal.

The opener "FOXP2" is almost entirely based around a mangled and warped sample and channels an eerie, almost sci-fi ambience. This track is likely best candidate on the EP for soundtrack to a midnight drive.

"Chupacabra" was originally slated to appear on "Broken Mirror," but was ultimately the album was better without it. This is one of my few released songs to feature slap bass - while I'm quite fond of this playing style, I always hesitate to overuse it, so I rarely end up using it at all. It works quite well on this track.

"DMG Dustbunnies" was done during a binge of creating very retro-sounding game music. I have several tracks that were done for a friend and to be used in a release, but are now in-limbo and will very likely never see the light of day. The addictive melodies and simplistic arrangements of classic video game music have always served as an inspiration to me.

The original version of "Distress Signal" was quite different from the final album track on "Broken Mirror." I do enjoy this version and the opening reminds me a little bit of Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" with a driving bassline - only here played by a Korg Volca Bass rather than Tom Hamilton.

Finally, the track "Queen of Compassion" wraps up the EP. This cut was originally going to serve as a companion track to the opening song on "Broken Mirror." In its released form however, it lacks any kind of vocal or lyrics - I still kept the title as I enjoyed it. It's a fairly short track, but goes through several different changes.

Thanks for listening!
